MENOPAUSE AT WORK

Empowering Women, Elevating Workplaces

UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT

A Growing Demographic of Workers
Women in their 40s and 50s make up a significant part of today’s workforce. Supporting menopausal employees improves health, retention, morale, and business performance.

Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, and the symptoms can significantly impact both the personal and professional lives of employees. For businesses, understanding and addressing these challenges is essential for retaining experienced staff and ensuring continued productivity.

WHY IT'S TIME TO ACT

Countries like Australia and the UK are leading the way in implementing workplace policies that support menopausal employees. Creating a similar culture of openness is vital for promoting understanding and empathy within organisations.  Australia has some stand out organisations, such as Deloitte, who has taken several actions to support employees going through menopause. This includes areas such as education & awareness in breaking down stigmas, enhancing protocols as to uniforms and access to portable fans and cold drinking water, and in providing personalised and tailored support in the acknowledgement that menopause affects everyone differently.

FOSTERING OPEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT MENOPAUSE

For many women, discussing menopause can be uncomfortable or even taboo and lets be honest, most women have no idea that the daily struggle they experience with symptoms are related to menopause, we simply were not educated or informed due to this very reason.

This is where we have to change the narrative, without open communication, employees may feel isolated or reluctant to seek the support they need. Employers must create a workplace culture that encourages a safe dialogue about menopause in a respectful and sensitive manner.

GLO Member experience - “I have always been a high performer, but the physical and emotional toll of unexplainable physical and mental symptoms—which I now know to be menopause—left me feeling overwhelmed at work. Not knowing what was happening to my mind and body and feeling out of control, I left a very senior position that I absolutely loved. I had to take time off to fully research and understand the true extent of hormonal aging impacts to get the right advice to return to my former self.

What I learned is that if I’d had the right advice, an employer who also understood the impact of menopause, and a supportive network around me, I wouldn’t have had to leave my job. The support I received from my new employer is exceptional, including flexible hours, location, and understanding from my team, which made all the difference. Such small changes mean the company benefits from my experience and success. I’m so grateful for the understanding culture that inclusivity creates.”
